Lions Roaaaaar!

Lions roar and the kiddos had a fun time creating these simple lions. We had the pieces pre-cut. An orange circle and a larger yellow circly with fringed edges. We supplied crayons to color and create a face, google eyes, yarn for the mane. A little glue and a big ROAAAAR.

Volunteers Needed!

We are currently accepting applications for summer volunteers in the Children's Department. Interested applicants must be 13 years old by June 1, 2015 and available at least four weeks between June 19 and August 29. The weeks need not be consecutive. Books in Brief: Neighborhood Sharks

The name of the book being recommended:  Neighborhood Sharks by Katherine Roy


Please give us five reasons why this book is awesome:

1. It's about sharks! The subject matter is awesome in and of itself!

2. It has beautifully illustrated paintings of sharks and their surrounding environment.

3. The textual material and accompanying diagrams are informative and incorporate the latest research into sharks' life cycle and hunting habits--if you're not a shark researcher or a close follower of the subject, you'll probably learn a lot (that goes for adults as well as kids)!

4. The book's depictions of a shark hunting are accurate (aka, lots of blood!) without being gruesome.

5. It offers ample "food" for thought to ponder the place of sharks vs. humans in the world beyond the confines of horror movies. To quote the book, "While their 800,000 human neighbors dine on steak, salad, and sandwiches, the white sharks hunt for their favorite meal." And the book clearly shows that sharks' favorite (or at least most typical) meal is not humans.

How can I find this book in the library? It can be found in the Children's Department, in non-fiction, under the call number j 597.33 R.

The Library of Congress National Book Festival Contest in underway and we have entry forms at the library in the Children's Department. Stop by the Children's Desk for your entry form. You could win up to $300 in prizes. Start thinking about a book that shaped you and pick up your entry form now!

And the Winner is.......... 26 Fairmount Avenue

The results are in from our google poll. You have chosen the next book for our 90 Second Newbery summer program. We will be reading 26 Fairmount Avenue by Tomie dePaole. There will be copies of this book set aside for you at the children's desk. We also have more copies on order. It is a shorter book so you will have no trouble finishing it before our first meeting on Thursday, June 26.

The 90 Second Newbery program is for children ages 8-12 years. We will meet on Thursdays in the summer from 2-3:30. We will take the book, 26 Fairmount Avenue, condense it into 90 seconds, perform, and film this masterpiece. Our film will be submitted to James Kennedy's Film Festival.  Online registration is required starting Monday, June 2 Register here starting June 2. You must commit to attend all 8 meetings. (Exceptions will be made for vacations) We also need a parent or legal guardian to sign a release form for you to be on film.  We have spots available working behind the scenes. For anyone who will not be on film a release form is not required.

90 Second Newbery

Vote for the book we will use for our summer 90 Second Newbery Program.
We will announce the winner on May 23. This will give you a month to read the book.
Please choose one book and please vote only one time.

Online registration for the 90Second Newbery program will begin Monday, June 2 at 10:30 am.
From June 20-August 15 we will meet every Thursday from 2-3:30 pm.

NYC or Bust!

Little Miss Kate and Little Miss Angie are off to NYPL to the 90-Second Newbery Festival

It all started with a great group of kids this past summer diligently working to create a 90 second film of the Newbery winning book Charlotte's Web by E. B. White. With hard work and lots of laughs we did it!!

Science in the Summer

We are able to confirm that Science in the Summer dates for Tredyffrin Public Library will be

July 28-July 31.

The topic this year is oceanography.

We do not yet know when sign-ups will be held. We will keep you posted.
