Summer Reading Ends Friday, August 9

Our Summer Reading Program ends on Friday, August 9. We want to congratulate all of our participants for a summer full of reading!! We had over 300 children participate this summer!!!

Our fall programs will begin on September 23.

Between now and September 23 you can still enjoy our Family Story Times on Monday and Thursday at 10:30 for ages 5 and under with a caregiver.

Away From Home Gnome

 

We have a fun program at the library called "Away From-Home Gnome". We provide a picture of a gnome printed on cardstock. You color in the gnome and cut him (or her, are there girl gnomes?) out. When you go someplace fun like vacation, to the park, or to a friends house  take a picture of your gnome. Bring the picture back to us at the library and we will display the pictures. This is a picture of my gnome in my garden smelling my beautiful basil. I haven't gone on vacation yet so my gnome took a "staycation" in our back yard :-)

 

 Make sure you stop by the Children's Desk to pick up your gnome to color and look at our window of gnomes to see where they have been.

Reading and Read-To-Me Clubs End Thursday, August 9!

1. The last day to stamp your Dream Journal or Read-To-Me Chart is Thursday, August 9. The library closes at 9:00, so please be at the Reading Club table by 8:30 pm so that we have time to help you. The Reading Club Table will not be open on Friday, August 10.

2. The party for the participants in the Reading and Read-To-Me Clubs (Groove Rockstar Event) will be on Friday, August 10 at 3:00. Registration is not necessary, but since this event is only open to summer participants, you MUST bring your stamped Dream Journal with you to gain admittance. We will have the Read-To-Me binder at the door for members of that club to claim their completed charts and use them for admission. Just a reminder that attendees under the age of 6 must be accompanied and closely supervised by an adult.

3. The Final Prize Store for participants in the Reading Club only will open during the Groove Rockstar Event, and will remain open in the Children's Department through Friday, August 24 at 6:00 pm. You MUST bring your stamped Dream Journal to claim your final prize. One prize per Reading Club member. Read-To-Me members received weekly prizes and are therefore not eligible for store prizes.

Live! at the Library: Elmwood Park Zoo On Wheels!

“SENSATIONAL ANIMALS”

Please join us in the large event room for "Sensational Animals." The staff of the Elmwood Park Zoo will bring live animals and touchable artifacts to the library to help us explore our five senses and how animals use their senses in similar or different ways.

This program will admit up to 100 people on a first- come basis, so please be prompt and be sure to allow enough time for parking. Any child age 6 and under must be accompanied and closely supervised by an adult. Admission is FREE, but you need a ticket. We will start handing out tickets at 10:30 am, and we will stop when we reach 100 or when the program starts, whichever comes first.

Elmwood Park Zoo was established in 1924 and is operated by the Norristown Zoological Society, a non-profit organization whose mission is to foster an appreciation of wildlife and their habitat that will inspire active participation in conservation. Under the Society’s careful management, Elmwood has attained elite status as one of only 225 institutions accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. Family Storytimes

Our popular Family Storytimes, led by the wonderful Miss Angie, will continue on Mondays and Thursdays (except Memorial Day) at 10:30am for ages 5 and under with caregiver. Starting the week of June 18th and ending on August 10th, Family Storytimes will be on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday at 10:30am.

Summer Events-No Sign Ups, Now "First Come, First Served"

How do I sign up for these great Children's Department Special Events?You don't!  This year all of our special events and storytimes (see Summer Reading 2012 flyer) will operate on a first come, first served basis. Starting 1/2 hour before the start time of the scheduled event, staff will distribute "Terrific Tredyffrin Tickets" to those waiting to attend the event.

How many tickets will be distributed?Each event has a different maximum amount and tickets will be distributed until that maximum amount is reached.  The maximum amount will be posted on special event flyers displayed in advance of the performances.

Does my child need to be a certain age to attend a Special Event program?Often children do need to be a certain age to attend an event or performance.  We will adhere to the age limit that is set by our performers to ensure an appropriate audience and fairness for all attending. Age restrictions will be posted on our Special Event promotion materials.

Will storytimes be affected by the first come, first served policy?All programs conducted by library staff (except 90 Second Newberry and Science in the Summer) will operate on a first, come basis too and age restrictions will be in place.

Science in the Summer

It's that time again - time to start answering your questions about Science in the Summer! Here are the basics:

When is Science in the Summer at Tredyffrin Library?

Science in the Summer will take place the week of July 9-12.

But isn't the library closed on Wednesdays?

Tredyffrin Library will be closed to the public on Wednesday, July 11, but participants of Science in the Summer will have access to the large meeting room for the duration of the program that day.

What is the subject this year?

The subject for 2012 is Chemistry. I know this has been a popular one in the past; I'm looking forward to it, too!

When can I sign up?

Sign-ups for the program will be held Monday, June 18, in the children's department. Registration will be begin at 7pm and is first-come, first-serve!

What if I can't make it to registration, can I send somebody else to sign up my child?

The registration requires the signature of a child's parent or legal guardian. If we don't have the signature of a parent or legal guardian, we cannot accept your application.

Summer Reading Club Ends August 12!

A few reminders about the Summer Reading Club:

1. The last day to stamp your passport (RC) or map (RTM) is Friday, August 12. The library closes at 6:00, so please be at the Reading Club table by 5:30 pm so that we have time to help you. To be eligible for the sweepstakes drawing, your passport must be stamped and your entry must be in the jar no later than 3:00 pm on Friday, August 12.

2. During the last week of the Reading Club, those who have gold registration cards and who have eight stamps in their passports will be given a sweepstakes ticket each as their Week 8 prize. Only those who are eligible Reading Club participants will receive a ticket; all others in the Reading Club (stamping for Weeks 1-7) and Read-To-Me Club (stamping for Weeks 1-8) will receive those weeks' prizes.

3. Sweepstakes winners will be announced at the Ice Cream Social at 4:00 pm on August 12. If you haven't yet registered, please do! To win the iPod Shuffle and the door prizes, you must be present at the social. All other winners need not be present.

4. If you registered for the Reading Club but never returned to stamp your passport, it's not too late to earn a Week 1 canvas book bag! Just make sure to bring in your passport and get it stamped by 5:30 on Friday, August 12.

Lots of Talent On Display at Our Summer Kickoff!

Our Summer Reading Club Kickoff, One Library, Many Voices, brought lots of home-grown talent to the library on Friday, June 10. We had dances, songs, and jokes from all over the globe, performed by library staff members and several of our younger patrons. Thanks to everyone who made the event so much fun!

You Can Be a Star!

On Friday, June 10, the library is having a party, and you're invited! We'll be celebrating the start of our summer reading program with a variety show/open mike night. Won't you join us on stage?

Some of the library staff will be showcasing their talents at the party. Here is an opportunity to see us in a new light! (Sneak preview: ukulele ladies will be there!) We'd love to share the fun with you.

You can sing a song, do a dance, read a poem, juggle, perform magic, tell a joke...as long as it's G- or PG- rated, and under 5 minutes long, anything goes! We'll have an accompanist at the keyboard as well, if you have sheet music you'd like to bring.

Road Trip Thursday Goes Global!

Pack your bags and don't forget your passport! Road Trip Thursday is leaving our 50 states behind and heading for foreign shores this summer.


If you're entering grades 1-5 in the fall, come join us as we explore the stories, culture, games and (yes, sometimes) food of these countries. You do not have to come all 8 weeks, but you do have to register for each week you'd like to come. Registration for Week 1 (Mexico) begins June 13.
