Hey, it's the summer "Dig Into Reading!" version of Pre/K story time, and we're still rockin' the best of our picture book collection. Check it out!
My Garden
story and illustrations by Kevin Henkes
If Henkes has ever produced a sub-par picture book I have yet to see it. This is one of his best, and it provided the inspiration for today's craft project.
The Gardener
story by Sarah Stewart
illustrations by David Small
Husband-and-wife Small and Stewart always produce books that are touching, funny, and engaging. This Depression-era epistolary story of a country girl who goes to live with her baker uncle in the big city is a charmer from start to finish.
Grandpa Green
story and illustrations by Lane Smith
Better-known for his hilarious collaborations with Jon Scieszka, like
The Stinky Cheese Man and
John, Paul, Ben, and George, Smith goes gentle with this story of a green-thumbed gardener told through the eyes of his loving grandson. The artwork is not to be missed.
Our art project today was to design a dream garden on paper, both above and beneath the ground, using markers and foam insects, and it produced some beautiful, creative, and zany results.
If you know someone ages 4-6 who loves stories and simple craft projects, please bring them along next Tuesday! StoryCrafts runs Tuesdays, 3:00-3:45 pm, from June 25 through August 5. Pre-registration is not required, but free tickets are, and the group size is limited to 18 participants. Tickets are available on the day of each class from 2:30 pm until they are gone or until the program begins at 3:00 pm, whichever occurs first. Children must be ages 4-6 and able to participate independently (without parents or caregivers).
